Registering to the background
If you are registering drawings to the background, there are some important points you should be aware of:
- Draw characters that need to be registered to a background as if they were working beneath an overlay, i.e. don't draw any match line, but draw enough of the character to fully make the match, and then some. It is much easier to use a vector matte to make the background match later, in the compositing stage. This is by far the best way to register a character to a background.
- If you choose to draw traditional registration lines, they should be black, like your character drawing, and only drawn as far as they are needed. They must be exactly matched to the final background, not to the layout. If you have shortfall discrepancies between the match line and the actual match, you will find they are very time-consuming to fix.
